Green laser light projected on a wall through a glass. The projection on the wall depicts a three dimensional image of woven structure

Mirage – Holographic surface

The project aimed at developing a continuous surface in a spatial environment. Inspired by optical illusions we wanted to try creating three-dimensional patterns through holograms. Differing from traditional holograms taken from objects we intended to project a surface relief-like texture. In the end, we re-created surface textures from textiles.

Context

We spent a large part of the project experimenting on producing holograms. We finally succeeded in developing several functioning, holograms on a glass plate. For the production, we used the setup and equipment of the optics laboratories in the department of applied physics at Aalto University.

Project documentation

The project was developed during the Eng-Arts collaboration at the Aalto University. The ENG-ARTS course combined technical and artistic thinking, through the collaboration of engineering and design students.
